You know that feeling … the warm, fuzzy one you get when you give a gift? Turns out, that feeling is good for your health.
For a few years now, researchers have been measuring the benefits of giving, and they’ve cottoned on to the idea that giving and volunteering help reduce stress and depression. The two things also promote healthy social connections and a sense of purpose. There’s enough research to show how giving, donating and volunteering has a positive impact on your physical and mental health and can contribute to you, living longer.
Further evidence of the positive effects of volunteerism was found in a study from Carnegie Mellon University, published in 2013 in Psychology and Aging. Researchers discovered that adults over age 50 who regularly volunteered were less likely to develop high blood pressure than their peers who didn’t volunteer. High blood pressure isn't something you want at any age, let alone over 50, as it greatly increases the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease and stroke.
The science of giving
Science has proven it. Research undertaken at the Harvard Business School found among 632 surveyed that those who spent money on others reported greater happiness, while those who spent more on themselves did not.
And feeling good is a good thing, right? Other things that feel good include ‘sexiness’
(Glad we got your attention there.)
In the journal Evolutionary Psychology, it was confirmed that selflessness is “a highly important characteristic trait women look for in long-term partners.” The results showed women preferred altruistic men, particularly in long-term relationships. This interacted with physical attractiveness: being both attractive and altruistic made a man more desirable than just the sum of the two desirable parts.
This research is consistent with a German study from 2017, which found engaging in altruistic behaviour increases the odds you’ll find a romantic partner the following year.
